WOMEN in CONSTRUCTION
Non-Pro. In 35 years of construction – for myself without gain – I permit myself to comment on how the cards are dealt to women who with their own two hands do – framing, roofing, flooring, tiling, drywall, other carpentry, electrical (simple) and plumbing (simple) as well as grading and other road work, building horse fences and clearing land. And have to deal with big companies (or local contractors) for other work. Interesting stories. The very first thing I learned in all those years is, that if you need a contractor and you are a woman, most never show up. That’s a given. If some do show up, they often are either impolite or patronizing. Or – what happened more often than not – they do sloppy work. And many times I have to fix it myself after having paid them. I had incidences that contractors brought along a wife in their truck. Give me a break ! Or they try to come on to you, like happened with a big gas company in Alberta. As a friend told me “the electrician did some work in the house, suddenly he disappeared, I found him in the attic – naked “ Ha, ha ! From a more practical point of view: I also invented over time several useful techniques on how to make it easier to deal with the heavy stuff – like mounting a drywall sheet. Or using my 3/4 ton truck to help with getting the wooden walls into my big riding arena, 4in lag screws. Luckily, today there are thousands of websites on construction details and techniques, some are very good and most are professional, and lots are where women show what they can do. Good for you. Food for thought: “most important tools ? measuring tape/laser, and level” – of course some think it is the hammer and they treat everything like a nail, but that ain’t so. Never use nails, always use screws. Stuff can be undone when needed. Last not least: “if you cannot do it right, don’t do it at all.”
Grizzly Bear Trophy Hunting
Illegal trophy hunts of grizzly bears. It is a cowardly act to kill unarmed civilians during a war or occupation, the hunt is also on for trophy grizzly bears. Mostly residing in Canada’s northern British Columbia. The numbers are staggering – 300 bears killed a year, 250 bears by way of (lottery-assigned) trophy hunts. Trophy hunting resulting in taking the head, paws, having the pelt processed for mounting.
“The trophy hunting of coastal grizzlies is not so much a sport as a search and destroy mission by trophy hunters with militia-style mindsets” (cowards who missed out of serving in any significant war theater and intend to make up for it.) These majestic creatures are already fighting pollution, habitat loss and pipelines crisscrossing their habitat [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enbridge_Northern_Gateway_Pipelines ] Suggestion to those ‘militia-style skinheads’ : “Stand in front of a mirror, shoot at yourself, pin on some (purple heart or other) silly war medal, and march in the Memorial Day parade “I am a hero, I served”. At least that way some of the grizzlies can stay alive.
Coming back to trophy hunting of our grizzly friends in BC: The EU has issued a ban on import of such animal parts. However, hunters from Europe and elsewhere in North America come here regularly to hunt, get the skins processed and somehow illegally export them to their country. The Rain Coast Conservation Organization is working on this. [ http://www.raincoast.org/projects/grizzly-bears/troph-hunting/ ]
[NOTE. s.a. https://renataveritasopinion.wordpress.com/2013/09/23/obsession-with-guns/ ]

Obsession with Guns
Sick minds ? Or coldblooded opportunists ? The newest fad is ‘printing your own automatic’ using 3D software and a specialized printer to manufacture the parts. [ http://motherboard.vice.com/read/click-print-gun-the-inside-story-of-the-3d-printed-gun-movement-video ]. This being a law student at a reputable US university and does this as a major sideline. Guns can be addictive. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. There is always a human brain behind the ‘trigger finger’. What do all these have in common ? Shootings and mass killings are not incidental or accidental, they most likely are deliberate and they are learned behaviour. Good old dad – who knows – served in some war and teaches his sons to become ‘war savvy’. Why do shooters single out children ? Because of easy access to schools, because the targets are not armed and more likely than not, the shooter can go down “in a blaze of glory” – a hero.
Young people (remarkably, most of those are male) who are addicted to shooting and guns only need one thing: WW3. On their own home turf, not on some other nation’s. To serve in the war, to suffer the consequences of a major war, to get it out of their system. Apparently they have too much time on their hands. Or suffer from hormone overload. Or both. And at the end of such a war, you see them crying and breaking down, suffering from some mental disorder. They found out the hard way, there is no call to 911 (or was it 9/11?).
Extreme Capitalism and Poverty
Goes hand in hand. Current stats show that 20% of the Rich own 80% of the Capital. Nothing new here. In the 1960s when I was still in Europe I read the book by L.L. Mathias, published 1964 by Rowohlt Verlag GmbH, Hamburg, Germany. It was written in German, titled: DIE KEHRSEITE DER USA. (The other side of the USA). President John F. Kennedy in his first address to the United Nations, January 30, 1961: “ Before my term ends, we will have to determine again if a nation who is as organized and governed as ours, can continue to exist. The result is not at all certain.” [L.L. Mathias, 1893-1970. Journalist, Author; lived long in South America, Mexico, then USA]. His most acclaimed book critically explores what is behind the ‘glitz and glimmer’ of the USA, to present a realistic assessment. I have this book in my own library with hundreds of other books in four languages, most of them impossible to buy anywhere now.
What we learnt here is what is being discussed today: Extreme capitalism cannot help any nation to become a sound and well-founded democracy. According to current statistics, the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer, or otherwise also known as the “water treading” syndrome – standstill, we are not getting anywhere, we have more poverty, less government money, more people on ‘life support’. The question that always comes to mind is: Why do those who have incomes or capital in the billions need so much money ? Just like the poor, they can only eat, sleep and s*%#. They can only eat so much. Or do they need sandwiches with 24 carat gold pate ? Or platinum toilet seats ? A poor person, or even a regular dude, can live on 10 dollars a day, while the rich dude needs at least 500 thousand dollars a day. You must be kidding ! Same with housing. One person can only live in one house at a time. Why one hundred houses, for what ? The US government is going to go broke so bad, they already have trillions in debt, they won’t be able to support a growing army of welfare recipients and poor. Why is it not possible to curb this endless greed. Instead, develop a healthy democracy where all citizens can live and have enough to eat and a shelter over their head.
It is true that those who are rich also pay higher taxes (or at least should pay), on the other hand it is also true that money corrupts. The more you have, the more you want. [My own example: In 2002 I sold my condo 3000 square feet size and lived in my mini van for three months – 9 square ft. Everything is possible. Didn’t bother me a bit.]
CYCLING – tips & observations
Fact is, the more you ride your bicycle the more experience you gain, the more confident you are moving with the flow of the other vehicle traffic.
Victoria British Columbia Canada – although described as the “bicycle capital of Canada” – is not easy to negotiate. Two reasons: (1) Since Vancouver Island is just one big volcanic rock, city streets are never just level, they are up and down, climbing and descending, oftentimes steep.(2) Victoria is an older city and many streets are narrow, having gotten too small for the amount of increasing traffic. That means that only select streets and thoroughfares have marked bicycle lanes. Usually just painted demarcations in the street, sharing busy roads with cars, trucks and buses. There are no dedicated bicycle lanes like in many European cities or larger cities in Canada. Where enough space is available to have bike lanes.
In summary, in Europe for example, of one thousand cars there may be 200 bicycles in the roads. In Canada, out of one thousand cars there may be 20 bicycles. To cycle safely, it needs a couple of tricks or tips (to keep you alive): Traveling along the road through numbers of traffic lights (signals at each corner) as a cyclist one should always stop when the lights turn yellow (while a car can easily make it through the yellow lights, a bike cannot). What I do ? Observe both the big lights for changing and the smaller ones for the pedestrian crossings. When the pedestrian lights blink red and the big lights are still green, slow down, YELLOW will follow quick. Next tip: When cycling down a busy street and cars are coming at you and behind you, try to check (half-turn head) behind you right and left. There are cyclists that try to pass you on your right. A big NO-NO and dangerous. (Unless you have small rear-view mirrors attached).
I cycle a lot. And we have wonderful (out-of-city) bicycle trails. That’s fine and dandy. But from my house to get to those trails I still have to cover one km to arrive at any bike trail. Another thing to observe is, always indicate your turns (right or left). Some cyclists don’t. And never cycle in pairs. Even on the trails, where many do it. Cycling in groups and talk, talk, instead of respecting others on the trails.
What counts most is experience: If one cycles only twice a year, then it’s difficult to feel confident in heavy traffic. And don’t forget the tools. One more little tip (concerning the theft of bikes or bicycle parts). I now got myself two lock chains: One for the seat, the helmet and the rear wheel, the second for the front wheel, the frame and firmly connected to a post or bike rack. There are nice lock chains now which can be registered online for in case one looses a key. Another little tip (after I had a tire blow out on the trail) is to always keep cash with you to take a bus home. Bikes here can be mounted free of charge on the front of a city bus (room for two). Or carry a spare tube. The obvious: wear bright colored clothing, that helps.
One more issue: Cycling on the side walks, among pedestrians. Illegal here in Canada. Most that do are likely to be young males. If older senior citizens can cycle in the road with the vehicular traffic, then they can do that too. This rule I like here in Canada. Compared to eg. Germany Berlin where people cycle on the sidewalks and when walking, your head has to be screwed backward all the time. Enough of this: HAPPY & SAFE CYCLING !
HIROSHIMA and NAGASAKI remembered
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:%22Jap…You%27re_Next%5E_We%27ll_Finish_the_Job%22_-_NARA_-_513563.jpg so, who is next on your plate ?
August is the month to remember the horrendous war crimes carried out against the Japanese civilian population, where hundreds of thousands civilians and fellow-Christians were killed in the fire storms released by the plutonium bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And many more following those years by the radiation effects. [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Man ] August 6 and August 9 of 1945, following May 1945, the surrender of Germany after 3 years relentlessly fire bombing civilians, women and children. The children were Nazis ? Ha, ha. The Japanese civilians were fascists ? No way.
And who got away with murder and mass killings and is now celebrated as ‘war hero’ , perpetually during the remembrance and memorial day celebrations ? Those responsible for it. How do they feel about it ? Do we hear again: “We did not do it” ? They actually solidly revel in the belief that little children were carrying arms and shooting the Allied planes out of the sky.
[It just so happens that I am a victim of war, I was three years old when we were fire bombed every night by the British and every day by the Americans/Canadians]
FUKUSHIMA NUCLEAR CONTAMINATION OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2013/08/04/Fukushima-plant-leaking-toxic-water-into-Pacific/UPI-25971375627085/ Translating into 100 times more radioactive fallout than normal, that eventually can leak into the groundwater. What about the fish we eat ? Contaminated food imports from Japan ?
Vancouver Island on the Pacific Coast of Canada. What do those two have in common ? I live on Vancouver Island, moved here September 2002. This morning I hear on the radio the following again: the amount of radioactive materials that have been washed into the Pacific Ocean not only after the nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, but apparently for years before. In the belief that radioactive fallout will be absorbed into the ocean. But this is not true. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDYvsbRnVeQ
So, I am drinking my daily water, from the tap. It is supposed to be clean and clear. Where does it come from: From the Sooke Regional reservoir, which is connected to the Sooke Lake Basin, Juan de Fuca Strait (Southern border of Vancouver Island), [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strait_of_Juan_de_Fuca ] and the latter connected West to the Pacific Ocean. But as usual, everything is always HUSH, HUSH by the authorities. Can we have some explanations ?>

And can you believe, that real estate on Vancouver Island sells in the millions of dollars, some properties 3 or more million dollars ? To not even have clean water supply ?
TIME TO GET OUT OF DODGE ! (meaning for me, to get the heck out of here)
CONDOMINIUM OWNERSHIP cont’d.
Continuation of my discussion on Condo Ownership. It always amazes me that so few owners of this type of real estate understand the consequences of owning it. And that so few of real estate agents who are selling potential buyers into this kind of property explain the implications of owning a condominium. [Living in British Columbia, this type of residence or home is referred to as “strata” [ A strata usually is a geological entity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratum ]
Then why do realtors sell this type of property as a “suite” instead of referring to it as a unit in a shared building (shared by more than at least two owners who are responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, financial assets, insurance and other sundries) which – the bigger the building and the older it gets – could amount to millions of dollars for repairs and maintenance to the entire building structure. Hence “an albatross around my neck” expression.
What makes it much worse is the loss of control each unit holder has on the operation of such a building, worse the larger it is. And those who are running the day to day whatever is needed, or even worse, an external management company, otherwise also referred to as “mismanagement company”. It is common human nature that people enjoy controlling others. Unfortunately those are mostly the ones who are incompetent or know the least of construction, finance control. In several condo’s I owned I didn’t have a big problem. But once in a while one is hung up in a situation that becomes the background for a NIGHTMARE CONDO story. Especially if one sees one’s investment going down the drain – literally in a ‘waterfall of busted pipes and other regularly occurring floodings’.
Having lived so many years in Alberta, Canada, in my own homes, on my own land, not sharing any common property, or other buildings hanging around my neck and making my life more miserable, trying to get out is not an option anymore, but has become a necessity.
